Gum Grafts

A gum graft covers roots that have become exposed when gums recede, using tissue from elsewhere in the mouth or another graft material.

What a consultation may cover

  • How much recession there is and why
  • Sensitivity on exposed roots
  • Whether you'd be referred for this procedure

What to expect

Your dentist explains the type of graft and aftercare. This is often done by a periodontist; you'll be told if a referral is needed.

Things to know

Grafting doesn't address the cause of recession on its own, such as brushing too hard or gum disease.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • What's causing my recession?
  • Would you do this here or refer me?
