Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gum line. It removes tartar from root surfaces and smooths them so gums can reattach.

What a consultation may cover
- Pocket depths measured around each tooth
- Bleeding or receding gums
- Whether it will be done in one visit or several
What to expect
The area is usually numbed and cleaned section by section. A follow-up visit checks how the gums respond.
Things to know
It treats gum disease but can't regrow bone that has been lost. Ongoing home care and maintenance visits matter.
Questions to ask your dentist
- How deep are my gum pockets?
- What maintenance will I need after?
- What if the pockets don't improve?
General information, not medical advice. Your dentist can advise what suits you.
