Checkups & prevention

Dental Exams & Checkups

A checkup is a regular look at your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth. It gives your dentist a baseline, so changes can be noticed while they are still small.

What a consultation may cover

  • Any changes you've noticed since your last visit
  • Your medical history and medications
  • Whether X-rays are needed this time
  • How often you should come back

What to expect

Your dentist examines your mouth, may take images, and explains what they see. If anything needs attention, they describe the options before any treatment is scheduled.

Things to know

An exam shows your mouth at one point in time. Some problems only show up on X-rays or develop between visits.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • How often should I have a checkup?
  • Is there anything I should watch for at home?
  • Do I need X-rays today, and why?

General information, not medical advice. Your dentist can advise what suits you.
