Root canal care

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment cleans out inflamed or infected tissue inside a tooth's roots, then seals the space to help keep the tooth.

Root canal care is also described under Root canal therapy.

What a consultation may cover

  • Symptoms such as lingering sensitivity, pain or swelling
  • X-rays of the tooth
  • Whether a crown will be needed after
  • Alternatives, including removal

What to expect

The tooth is numbed and isolated. The canals are cleaned, shaped and filled, and the tooth is then restored.

Things to know

Some teeth have complex roots or cracks. Your dentist may refer to an endodontist, a dentist who specializes in root canals.
